This isn't quite an antique, but thought I would try here first.Just picked up a Rockwell/Delta 14' bandsaw. Privious owner did a total rebuild, including painting over all tags. Other than that, it was a real nice rebuild.This model does not appear to have a knob to pull out or a lever to turn to shift from backgear to direct drive. It seems that if you turn the backgear shaft it drives as would be expected. If you turn the direct shaft, the backgear shaft becomes idle. If you turn the direct drive shaft the wrong way, it won't turn because of the backgears.I have not found a version of the saw that has 'automatic' gear changing, but maybe I have just missed it. Am I missing something?

I don't want to tear anything up, but other than the original step pulleys missing, it looks to be complete.Serial number is BU8572.Privious owner was using it for wood, and had a large pulley on the motor driving a small pulley on the backgear trying to get the speed high enough for wood. The newer version of this saw has a clutch in the hub of the wheel drive shaft (part 144). I don't remember the exact means of engaging/disengaging, but I do recall that on some of the 'unrestored' old saws I've looked at, this clutch can be difficult to shift, probably due to old/dried oil.Sounds like the previous owner didn't understand the operation.I'm just up the road from you, in Arnold. I do have the right serial number to fit in that catagory (it covers up to BU-8780, and I have BU-8572).The question remains, there is no obvious external way to shift from back gear to direct. No shaft that pulls out, no lever to turn.
And the parts manual does show what looks like it would be an external clutch (parts 144) and and internal clutch (Part 146). I would be missing the external clutch, but I'm not sure if that is really needed, or if it is just a way to slide the larger pulley for direct drive out of the way. First, does your saw have an oil fitting on the lower front of the case? If not, then it's a wood only saw.Next, look at the shaft behind the upper drive pulley. Is there a Lovejoy (dog) type coupling on the shaft? If you see that coupling, you need to push/pull the shaft in/out (by the knurled knob on the end) to engage/disengage the slow speed gear hidden inside the case.I have never seen one with a clutch inside the gearbox.The earlier saws had a gearbox that bolted to the side of the main casting that used a small lever to operate.MelLast edited by Mel in WA; at 02:22 PM.Reason: add note about early saws.

Yes it has the oil filled gear box. It has two shafts. The upper shaft is on the lower wheel axis, and drives the bottom wheel directly when turned in the 'normal' way. When reverse, it will not turn (at least not easily, and I don't want to force it). The lower shaft will drives the lower wheel through a gear reduction.Both shafts are solid, and do not have any possibility of a shaft passing through them. I say this, but will take another look.
It is possible, but unlikely that the center shaft broke off cleanly and flush with the main shaft?It does not have a seperate lever to shift between the speeds.When using a 1750rpm motor, with a 2.5 inch (motor) to 6.5 inch (reduction shaft input)(about, didn't measure exactly), I measure 10rpm on the lower wheel shaft, about 40 feet per minute blade speed (I can count teeth going past).What is puzzling me is that the saw does not appear to be either of the 'normal' versions. It does not have the shifter lever, and it does not appear to have the shaft to pull out to shift.It appears to be the one as pictured in the lower part of page 3 of the parts list that JeffG posted above.I really do not see any way to shift.
